Westland Writes Submissions

Celebrate National Poetry Month with your own written creations. Westland Writes is the library’s 10th annual poetry and short story book collection with works by local poets and authors. Read our previous issues here! Each writer may submit up to 2 poems or 1 short story or chapter (max: 2500 words, email only) for the book to: alexis.tharp@westlandlibrary.org.

Submissions from writers living in communities neighboring Westland are accepted. Submissions will be accepted from April 1 to April 30. Please include your name, email, and phone number with each submission.

Each writer will receive a copy of the book at our Westland Writes Publishing Party on June 18. Happy writing!

This FREE program, presented by Starfish Early Learning Communities, meets twice a month at the Westland Library!  Children and their caregivers will enjoy interactive time together that includes stories, songs, group activities, play time and a snack.

Note: The program begins at 10am, with registration at the door and is limited to the first 10 families with children, ages 1-4.

Looking for help with your homework?  A volunteer college student or high school National Honor Society student will provide FREE homework help for students in grades 1-12.  This service is offered on Thursdays from 5-6:30pm and  Saturdays from 12-1:30pm.  Come to the Youth Department and sign up for 20 minutes or more of homework assistance.   Parents of children in 1st-6th grades need to sign child in and stay in the library.

Preschoolers ages 3.5 - 5 yrs. old, who are not yet in Kindergarten, can attend an independent storytime designed especially for them.  The use of picture books, songs, and told stories will encourage your child to read, talk, sing, write and play.

No registration is required.

Please arrive within 5 minutes of the start time. Storytime runs approximately 30 minutes long.
